The Challenge

Humanitas already had a comprehensive WiFi infrastructure in place to support the daily activities of doctors, nurses, and hospital staff. As patients' digital expectations continued to evolve, the hospital decided to extend this infrastructure to patients and visitors with two primary objectives: simplify the patient journey throughout the hospital and establish a digital touchpoint between the hospital and its patients.

The new digital infrastructure, however, needed to balance two very different requirements: protecting sensitive internal traffic while simultaneously supporting public WiFi access for patients and visitors.

This required a powerful and flexible user and traffic management platform capable of delivering an efficient onboarding experience while maintaining strict network segregation—an essential requirement in a healthcare environment.

To deliver such a critical service efficiently while maintaining complete control over patient data, Humanitas chose to deploy the authentication platform directly within its own data center.

The inPiazza Guest WiFi platform was installed on Humanitas' private on-premises infrastructure, with a direct connection to the hospital's WiFi network and no exposure to external systems.

Different user profiles were configured to ensure that every user connecting to the Humanitas campus WiFi received a tailored access policy. Connection duration, available bandwidth, traffic limits, and the number of simultaneous devices were all customized according to the user's profile, providing an optimized experience for every type of user.

Given the sensitive healthcare environment, particular attention was dedicated to user privacy. The entire onboarding process was designed to be fully GDPR compliant, ensuring that all consent collection and data processing activities meet the highest privacy standards.

Solution Components

  • Guest WiFiDesigned for occasional users such as patients and visitors who require internet connectivity while waiting for appointments or accompanying family members. Authentication is completed independently using a combination of Social Login and SMS verification.
  • Patient WiFi – Designed specifically for inpatients who require stable and persistent internet access throughout their stay. Authentication is performed using an individual access code provided at hospital admission.
  • Conference WiFi – Dedicated connectivity for attendees participating in conferences, symposiums, and events hosted at the Humanitas Conference Center. Access is granted through a dedicated event code, while selected information—such as professional role and organization—is collected during login.
  • Location AnalyticsAdvanced monitoring of passenger flows and WiFi network usage, providing valuable insights to support continuous improvements to the Patient Journey.

Integration with Existing Infrastructure

  • The inPiazza platform was seamlessly integrated with Humanitas' existing WiFi infrastructure. Its on-premises deployment within the customer's private data center enabled direct integration with the network while completely avoiding external exposure. This architecture preserved the separation between sensitive internal traffic and public guest traffic, while ensuring that all patient data remained entirely under the hospital's control.

Results

The service was adopted by hundreds of thousands of users, consistently supporting an average of approximately 1,000 concurrent users during business hours, while achieving a high percentage of returning users.

The combination of Humanitas' WiFi infrastructure and the inPiazza Guest WiFi platform delivered a seamless digital experience that was widely appreciated by patients and visitors, making their journey throughout the hospital campus simpler and more connected.
